The Inti
Raymi Festival: A Celebration of the Sun
The Inti
Raymi is a grand festival celebrated in Peru, especially in the city of
Cusco, to honor the Sun God, Inti. This ancient event has its roots in
the ceremonies of the Inca Empire and continues to be one of the most
important cultural celebrations in Peru today. Held every year on June
24th, during the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere, Inti Raymi marks
the start of a new agricultural cycle and honors the Sun for providing warmth
and life to the Earth.
The
Festival's Activities
The festival
begins with a procession, where thousands of people gather in the
streets of Cusco, dressed in colorful costumes. This is followed by a
grand parade that moves through the city to the Sacsayhuamán
archaeological site. At this site, participants perform dramatic
reenactments of ancient Inca rituals. These participants include actors
playing important roles such as the Sapa Inca, the high priests, and even the
Sun God himself. Before the big event, there are many rehearsals to make
sure that the actors know their lines and actions.
The itinerary
of the festival is packed with events, such as music, dancing, and speeches.
People attending the event enjoy these activities and also share a feast
to celebrate the harvest.
Volunteers
help with preparations and make sure everything runs smoothly throughout the
event. The onlookers—those who come to watch the festivities—cheer and
show their appreciation by clapping their hands in applause.
The tradition of Inti Raymi connects the people of Peru to their ancient roots, and the celebration continues to be an important cultural event that brings together both locals and tourists. The participants, the volunteers, and the onlookers all play an essential part in making the festival a huge success.
